The project is placed at the north of the Espirito Santo state in Brazil. The purpose of this project is to improve the local supply of electricity based on a clean and a renewable energy source by increasing the energy generation of an existing hydro power plant. The project comprises the installation of a new Kaplan turbine with a nominal capacity of 49.5 MW. This fourth generation unit will optimize the water flow that would be otherwise inefficiently released at the reservoir dam. The project activity uses the existing hydro power scheme and the existing electric infrastructure to increase the amount of generated energy. Therefore, the project foresees no changes on the volume of the reservoir and no additional environmental impacts.
With this project, local people will benefit from increased grid stability whereas energy transmission losses from outside of the project boundary will be reduced. Moreover, the project reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by improving the local supply of electricity based on a clean and renewable energy source. At the same time it contributes to sustainable development in the region through increasing environmental activities and economic benefits, notably by hiring local labour during the construction phase, payment of taxes to the municipality during the operation phase, as well as through various environmental programs. The project reduces about 50,466 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. Project description document Registry : http://cdm.unfccc.int/Projects/DB/SGS-UKL1183734827.45/view |
