1. How does CO2 affect the planet?
Ans.: To understand in detail the way CO2 contributes to the greenhouse effect, see the explanation in words and images in our ABCs of CO2 section.
2. Why offset CO2 emissions?
3. How does planting trees help the environment?
Ans.: To understand the process of how trees sequester CO2, the principle at the heart of the ZEROCO2 philosophy, see the visual explanation in the The Benefits of Trees section.
4. How do we determine how many trees need to be planted to offset the CO2 emissions generated by my car?
Ans.: By calculating your vehicle’s annual CO2 emissions. Calculate your emissions here.
5. Has it been proven that planting trees offsets our emissions?
Ans.: Trees, being made up of 50% carbon, represent one of the best ways to remove carbon from the air, absorbing it in the form of CO2. The Kyoto Protocol has already recognized that fact and encourages the planting of trees as one of the possible short-term options for the reduction of greenhouse gasses.
6. How will CO2 emissions be calculated?
Ans.: Calculations are made using rigorous equations that take into account several factors affecting the amount of CO2 emissions and according to reliable data. Coefficients used for calculating home, office or individual emissions use data provided by the Office of Energy Efficiency, Statistics Canada, Environment Canada, and Hydro-Quebec. Calculations for transportation and accommodation use data provided by Natural Resources Canada, the Railway Association of Canada and WWF Canada.
7. What is a carbon credit?
Ans.: Normally a carbon credit is the equivalent of a ton of GHG emitted. The credits are used to compensate for GHG emissions given off by the use of fossil fuels in the industrial, transportation or residential sectors. A carbon credit can be purchased by a country, a business or an individual. The most important criteria is “additionality,” which is the fact that a GHG emissions reduction project would not have happened if there wasn’t a concern for reducing climate change.
8. What are the Gold Standard and VCS certifications?
Ans.: Credits offered by ZEROCO2 are certified by the highest standards available on the voluntary carbon market, namely Gold Standard and VCS. Projects certified by these two standards bring together only the best the market has to offer. The criteria for these two certifications are therefore very strict, assuring the buyer that there investment will have a real impact on climate change. Consult the detailed section on the certification of our carbon credits here.
9. Where do the carbon credit projects offered by ZEROCO2 come from?
Ans.: Credits offered by ZEROCO2 come from numerous projects that contribute to the reduction of GHGs. For a complete list of these projects and their characteristics, consult the detailed section here.
10. Why are ZEROCO2 ‘s carbon credit prices lower than other credit suppliers?
Ans.: ZEROCO2 has developed international alliances that allow it to offer high quality carbon credits, certified by Gold Standard and VCS, at lower prices than other organizations presently involved in the voluntary offset market. As well, its immense buying power allows it to offer prices that defy all competition.
11. How does the ZEROCO2 program contribute to improving the environment?
Ans.: By planting trees and looking after them throughout the first critical years of their lives, ZEROCO2 takes part not only in the offsetting of CO2 emissions, but also contributes to the beautification of communities through the creation of green spaces in urban areas and fosters the biodiversity of the surrounding environment. As well, credits offered by ZEROCO2 are certified by the highest world standards, ensuring buyers that their money will be invested in GHG reduction projects that will have a real impact on climate change.
12. Will planting trees and buying carbon credits let me get away with not changing my polluting behaviours?
Ans.: Certainly not. The planting of trees and the purchase of credits are short-term options that allow you to offset your CO2 emissions, but the ideal remains the adoption of positive behaviours that are less harmful for the environment and therefore the reduction of the amount of emissions for which you are responsible each year. To allow you to make a first step towards the adoption of these behaviours, we have compiled some tips and tricks here to help you act in favour of the environment.
13. Are my CO2 emissions limited to those produced by my car?
Ans.: No. Other means of transportation and any devices requiring the use of fossil fuels generate CO2 emissions. Even the food you eat creates CO2 emissions.
14. How can I reduce my emissions?
Ans.: To help you make a first step towards adopting pro-environmental habits, we have put together a list of tips here to reduce your fuel consumption while driving.
15. How will my money be spent?
Ans.: Once your contribution is made, ZEROCO2 commits not only to planting your trees, but also to looking after them during their first years of growth, which are the most critical to their survival, thereby ensuring their long-term role for the environment. The main portion of your money will therefore go to the planting and maintenance of these trees. If you have also chosen to acquire carbon credits, your contribution will be used for the validation, certification and withdrawal of offset credits from the market. The remaining percentage, specifically, between 15 and 17%, goes to cover the costs of the program: administration, website, mailings, etc.
16. Is ZEROCO2 a non-profit organization?
Ans.: No. ZEROCO2 is a commercial business, which allows it to obtain funding from private businesses and ensure the public that the greatest part of their contribution will be invested in greenhouse gas reduction. Non-profit organizations are generally supported by government grants, preventing them from obtaining even more profitable funding from private businesses that see an investment opportunity through becoming involved. We believe this allows us to implement a project on a much larger scale, allowing us to reach the maximum number of people and multiply our pro-environmental impact by a factor of ten.
17. Can I get a tax credit by taking part in the ZEROCO2 program?
Ans.: Unfortunately, no. But thanks to the financing and participation of numerous businesses and groups, ZEROCO2 is doing its best to reduce the cost of your contribution and make it as affordable as possible.
18. Can I take part in the ZEROCO2 program even if I don’t live in Canada?
Ans.: Certainly. Climate change is a global problem, and greenhouse gasses don’t take borders into account.
19. I have already taken part in the ZEROCO2 program. What more can I do?
Ans.: Adopt sustainable pro-environmental behaviours, certainly, but also alk about the ZEROCO2 program to those around you, or help out those close to you by offering them an emissions reduction. The ZEROCO2 program offers, at different times, various emission compensation formulas. Visit our website regularly to see the latest offers.
